Mission Accomplished

ATLANTA – No. 20 Georgia Tech led after the first day of competition and finished second with 109 points, 15.5 behind eventual champion North Carolina, at the 2004 Indoor Atlantic Coast Conference Championships this past weekend, Feb. 20-21, in the Clemson Indoor Track and Field facility. The Yellow Jackets crowned two ACC champions and had a total of eight All-ACC honorees.

Leading the way was 2003 Indoor ACC Rookie Performer of the Meet, Chaunte Howard. Howard broke the school and ACC meet record in the high jump, tallying a nation’s best mark of 6’2.75″. Howard also posted a runner-up finish in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 20’1.00″. The Riverside, Calif., native tallied her third all-conference honor with a third-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 42’2.25″.

Freshman Ashlee Kidd left her first indoor ACC meet with a title in the 400 meters for the Jackets. Kidd posted a season-best time of 53.50, tallying a NCAA provisional mark in the event.

Junior Shanta Smith finished runner-up in the triple jump with a NCAA provisional mark of 42’10.75″. Smith is a two-time All-ACC honoree at the indoor meet.

Sophomore Lauren Reimer broke the school record in the pentathlon for Tech with a score of 3,659, shattering Pam Thomas’ record of 3,392. Reimer finished second to garner her first All-ACC honor.

Senior Amandi Rhett and junior Dana Rogers rounded out all-conference honorees for the Yellow Jackets. Rhett earned her third straight All-ACC honor for Tech, finishing second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.45.

Rogers posted a season-best time of 8.32 in the 60-meter hurdles to claim her first all-conference honor, finishing second with a NCAA provisional time.

Kidd (400), Howard (HJ), Rhett (60) and Rogers (60mH) will all travel to Boston, Mass., for the U.S.A Track and Field Indoor Championships, Feb. 27-29. The top two finishers in each event will compete for Team USA at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics March 5-7 in Budapest, Hungary.
