Jan. 17, 2009

LEXINGTON, Ky. – – Senior Jerome Miller’s first-place finish in the high jump capped off day one of the Kentucky Invitational Friday at the Nutter Field House in Lexington, Ky.

Miller’s height of 6-10.25 was all he needed to take home his second title in less than a week’s time.

Of the eight events Friday – all field events – Georgia Tech competed five. Freshman Mykhail Chambers locked down a tie for seventh place in the high jump, 6-04.25 mark of his own.

Sophomore Omar Morrision was the lone Tech competitor in the triple jump, leaping to a distance of 48 feet, 8 ¼ inches in his first competition of the 2009 indoor season.

On the women’s side, freshman Jhanelle Bailey finished ninth in the triple with a distance of 38-00.75. The women’s weight throw saw a seniors’ Kimery Hern and Alana Clooten go sixth and seventh, both reaching the same mark of 56-02.00 on their second toss. Hern finished ahead of Clooten because her second best throw of 16.92 meters was .32 meters longer than Clooten’s.

Tech Sophomore Erica Penk finished eighth in the women’s pole vault, reaching a height of 11-07.25.

The Jackets continue the Kentucky Invitational Saturday with the women’s high jump beginning at 10:30 a.m. followed by running events at 12:30 p.m.
