PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The doubles team of Kristi Miller and Alison Silverio, playing together for the first time in more than a year, advanced to the second round of the qualifying tournament at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, which began play Monday at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The Yellow Jacket duo last appeared together in the 2005 NCAA Doubles Championships after posting a record-breaking doubles campaign that year and picked up where they left off, winning their first match of the 2006-07 season, 8-3, over Marshall’s Lynzee Kever and Kellie Schmitt. They will face the duo of Amanda Fink and Judy DeVera from Southern Cal in the second round Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. PT
Elsewhere in the qualifying tournament, both Silverio and Tarryn Rudman dropped their first round matches in singles play but proceeded to advance to the second round of the consolation bracket with victories in the Tuesday afternoon matches.
LSU’s Megan Falcon stopped Silverio, 6-4, 6-1, in the morning match but the Yellow Jacket junior came back with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against North Carolina’s Caitlin Collins in the first round of consolations. She will meet Marion Raveljaona in the second round of consolations Wednesday afternoon.
Rudman dropped her first match of the day to Stanford’s Jessica Nguyen, 6-1, 6-1, but responded with a 7-6 (3), 6-0 victory over UCLA’s Ashley Joelson in her first consolation match to advance to Wednesday’s second round.
The first Intercollegiate Tennis Association national and singles and doubles championships of the 2006-07 season – the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships presented by Fila – is one of three national collegiate tennis championships this season. The Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships (its men’s counterpart, the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships takes place at the University of Tulsa at the same time), the Nov. 2-5 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis’ three national championship events during the season.
The premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season, the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships presented by Fila feature the top players in NCAA Division I tennis.
The Oct. 5-8 main draw is preceded by two sets of qualifying tournaments. The 64-player, 32 doubles team prequalifying tournament was Sept. 31-Oct. 1 at UCLA and eight players and four doubles teams advanced from there to the Oct. 3-4 64-player qualifying tournament at Riviera (where eight players and four doubles teams will advance to the main draw).
