Miller Leads Tech on Day One of NCAA Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Five members of the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams have moved on in their respective events on day one of the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif.

Sophomore Kimery Hern garnered a spot in the women’s hammer finals after placing 12th with a mark of 189 feet, 11 inches. The finals are scheduled for Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. PT. Freshman Samantha Musil finished 11th in the women’s discus prelims with a personal-best mark of 167 feet, 5 inches. Musil will compete in the discus finals on Friday at 3:15 p.m. PT.

Senior Fatmata Fofanah ran a personal-best time of 13.10 in the first round of the 100-meter hurdles to earn in a spot in the semifinals. Junior Shantia Moss also qualified for the semis after finishing second in her heat with a time of 13.23.

Fofanah finished the semifinal with another personal-best time of 13.09 to qualify for the finals on Friday at 5:45 p.m. PT. Moss came in at a time of 13.42 and did not qualify for the final, ending her quest to win both the indoor and outdoor NCAA titles.

Senior Ashlee Kidd ran a time of 52.82 in the first round of the 400-meter to qualify for the semifinal race, which will take place on Friday at 6:05 p.m. PT.

On the men’s side, junior Jerome Miller tied for first in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 10 ¾ inches to qualify to the finals, which are scheduled for Friday at 3:00 p.m. PT.

Redshirt freshman Steve Marcelle placed 20th in the men’s discus with a mark of 178 feet, 4 inches to close out his impressive first season at Tech.

The meet will continue tomorrow as sophomore Jacqua Williams begins her quest for the 200-meter title at 3:50 p.m. PT.
