Michael Kay in BB&T Atlanta Wild Card Challenge

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s Michael Kay is one of four players who will compete in the BB&T Atlanta Open Wild Card Challenge beginning Tuesday at Atlantic Station.

The winner of the BB&T Atlanta Open Wild Card Challenge will earn a wild card into the Qualifying Tournament of the BB&T Atlanta Open. The Wild Card Challenge matches are free and open to the public. Kay will face Trent Bryde from Lifetime Tennis Academy in one semifinal match around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, following the other semifinal pitting Trey Yates of Kentucky and Kyle Montrel of Xavier University of Louisiana. The two winners will face off for the qualifying berth at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The tournament’s 32-player Qualifying Tournament runs Saturday, July 25 -Monday, July 27. Four qualifiers will move into the main draw. Tickets are required to attend the Qualifying Tournament.

The four competitors each won a pre-qualifying event conducted in Atlanta the weekend of June 15.

Kay has enjoyed a strong summer of tennis which included reaching the finals of the U.S. Open National Playoffs Southern Qualifying tournament and the Atlanta City Open. He went 23-21 in singles for Georgia Tech last year as a freshman.

His sophomore teammate, Christopher Eubanks, has already received a wild card entry into the main singles draw, which begins July 25 and runs through Aug. 2 at Atlantic Station. It is the fifth straight year an active Yellow Jacket player has participated in the U.S. Open Series event.
