Miami Stops Tech's Winning Streak, 75-63, in ACC Opener

ATLANTA – Despite double-doubles by both Janie Mitchell and Stephanie Higgs, the Georgia Tech women’s basketball team fell for the first time in seven games, 75-63, to Miami (11-2, 1-0 ACC) Thursday night at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The Yellow Jackets fell to 11-2 on the season and fell in a conference opener for the first time in three years.

Miami’s Tamara James and Renee Taylor led the Hurricane attack with 18 points, while Brittany Denson connected on 6-of-10 from the field, scoring 16 points against the Jackets.

It was the third-straight game that Mitchell notched a double-double, as she had 10 points and 10 rebounds against the `Canes, while Higgs recorded the second double-double of her career with 21 points and 11 boards.

Chioma Nnamaka connected on 7-of-12 from the field, including shooting 50 percent from beyond the three-point arc, for 16 points on the night.

The Jackets held Miami off the boards all night, as Tech outrebounded the Hurricanes by a 48-26 margin, but the Jackets turned the ball over 11 more times than the visitors, resulting in 28 points off turnovers for the Hurricanes.

After trailing by nine coming out of halftime, the Yellow Jackets used a 12-7 run to pull within four points with 15:56 remaining in the game on a layup by Higgs. Tech would pull within four points again five more times over the next 11:34, but would get no closer, as the Hurricanes had a 16-8 run to end the game.

Overall, Miami shot over 46 percent from the field and connected on 73.1 percent from the free throw line (19-for-26), while Tech went 24-for-61 from the floor (.393) and converted on just 64.7 percent at the line.
