CLEMSON, S.C. – Sparked by sophomore Renee Metivier’s runner-up finish, the Georgia Tech women’s cross country team placed fourth at Saturday’s 2001 ACC Championships. The Yellow Jacket men finished sixth.
Metivier covered the six-kilometer course in a season-best time of 20:39.2, finishing behind individual champion Shalene Flanagan of North Carolina. Metivier’s finish is the highest ever for a Yellow Jacket women’s individual at the ACC meet. She also became the first Tech All-ACC selection since Beth Mallory in 1996.
She was followed by senior Sara Pardue, who finished 17th, sophomore Katie Griffin, who finished 26th, and senior Nicole Campbell, who placed 28th. Also scoring for Tech was Amy Edwards, who finished 34th.
On the men’s side, the Jackets were led by senior Joey Zins, who clocked a time of 25:12.0 to finish 17th in the 8K race. Sophomore Brendon Mahoney finished 28th, while classmate Neil McDonagh was 33rd. Sophomore Kyle Rabbitt (37th) and senior Phillip Gable (38th) also scored for Tech.
The fourth-place finish for the women was the team’s best since placing third in 1994. The men improved on last year’s eighth-place finish to place sixth for the second time in the last three years.
NC State captured both the men’s and women’s team titles. Nathan Sisco of Wake Forest was the men’s individual champion.
Georgia Tech returns to action Saturday, November 10, at the NCAA South Regional Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
