THE FLATS – Georgia Tech has received both of the ACC Men’s Tennis Weekly Awards, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. Marcus McDaniel has been named the ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week along with ACC Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week with teammate, Andres Martin.
ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
As an unranked player, McDaniel defeated two of the Top 20 singles players in the NCAA last weekend. On Friday, he took down No. 8 South Carolina’s No. 12 Connor Thomson 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Before the match, Thomson was undefeated in dual match play with a 6-0 singles record.
In Sunday’s doubleheader against No. 13 Georgia and the Citadel, McDaniel claimed two more singles wins. He earned another upset as he beat Georgia’s No. 8 Philip Henning in two-straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The junior went on to defeat the Citadel’s Hayden Shoemake in a 6-0, 6-2 decision.
McDaniel is currently 10-1 in dual match play and 4-2 against nationally ranked opponents.
ACC Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
No. 60 Martin and McDaniel went 2-0 this past weekend, with both wins being against nationally-ranked doubles pairs.
In Friday’s match against South Carolina, the duo was down 4-2 before tying it up 4-4 with No. 3 Connor Thomson and Toby Samuel. The two doubles pairs were forced into a tiebreak round when Martin and McDaniel achieved the upset with a 7-6 [7-5] win.
The Tech duo was also victorious against Georgia’s No. 24 Ethan Quinn and Trent Bryde in a quick 6-2 finish.
Martin and McDaniel are on an eight match winning streak and currently have an 8-1 record in dual match competition.
