THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team has earned its first team national ranking of the season, coming in at No. 69 on this week’s ITA Division I Men’s Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
The Yellow Jackets are currently 9-5 and have faced four nationally-ranked programs this spring. Tech has three players on the ITA’s Top 125 Singles list and one doubles pair on the ITA’s Top 60 Doubles list. Andres Martin sits at the No. 34 in the rankings, Marcus McDaniel holds the No. 47 spot and Keshav Chopra ranks 85th in the nation. Tech’s top doubles duo, Martin and McDaniel, climbed from No. 60 to No. 21 within two weeks of competition and are on a nine-match winning streak.
The Jackets have seen a good amount of success throughout their busy schedule this season. Most of tech’s victories can be credited to singles wins by its players in the top three positions. The Jackets hold an 11-3 record at the No. 1, No. 3 positions and a 10-3 record at the No. 2 position. Also, Tech has claimed the doubles point in nine matches this season. Seven out of those nine matches resulted in a team victory.
Tech is one of 12 ACC programs to be represented in the national team rankings. The Jackets are set to open conference play this weekend against two of these opponents, No. 25 Wake Forest and No. 39 NC State.
