Men’s Tennis Earns Highest Ranked Win In History

ROME, Ga. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis earned the highest ranked win in program history with a 4-2 victory over No. 7 Wake Forest on Friday. This is the second win over a team ranked No. 7. The last time being on March 15, 2019 when No. 7 UNC fell at Ken Byer Tennis Complex 4-3.

Tech advances to the semifinals of the ACC tournament for the first time since 2017.

The singles action started with Tech taking the first set on four singles courts, setting the stage for the four requisite points to take the team win.

Andres Martin and Chen Dong would make quick work of their matches on courts one and four by scores of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-3 to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 lead. They would never relinquish the lead.

With the match knotted up at 2, Marcus McDaniel came through with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory on court two to give Tech a 3-2 lead. The remaining two matches were slated to start their third sets.

On court three, Keshav Chopra jumped out to a quick lead before having match point at 5-2. After an 18-hit rally, Chopra sliced a ball down the line away from his opponent to secure the 6-2 match win and 4-2 team win.

“It was exhilarating,” Chopra said. “I hadn’t looked at the scoreboard the entire match until I was up 5-2 in the third. I’ve been in this position before so I felt ready and went for my shots. Hitting the last winner was an unreal feeling and when the bots swarmed me I went to another place. Right now I’m very happy, that’s all I can say.”

The White and Gold will continue ACC tournament play on Saturday when they face No. 17 UNC in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. The match starts at 10 a.m. and will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
