Joao Menano dropped a three-set match to Ricardo Gonzalez at No. 6 singles as the No. 17 Georgia Bulldogs held on to defeat the No. 34 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 10-5 while the Bulldogs improve to 8-2.
The Yellow Jackets opened the match dropping the doubles point as the fifth-ranked duo of Bo Hodge and John Isner defeated the Jackets’ 15th ranked tandem of Scott Schnugg and Marko Rajevac, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Strahinja Bobusix and Matias Ormaza paired together to defeat Jason Pieters and West Nott. Tech’s only victory in doubles came at No. 3 where Zachary Rath and Jose Luis Muguruza combined together to beat Matic Omerzel and Ricardo Gonzalez, 8-5.
After dropping the doubles point, Tech fought hard, posting wins at No. 1 singles as Scott Schnugg upset #12 Bo Hodge in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5 and Jason Pieters rallied to upset #49 Matias Ormaza 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Tech took a 3-2 lead with a with a win at No. 4 singles from West Nott, 7-6, 6-3 over Matic Omerzel. The Bulldogs then tied the match a 3-3 as Strahinja Bobusic held on to beat Zachary Rath 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Georgia then received the decisive point at No. 6 singles.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Saturday when they host Furman at 1 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
