Menano Leads Tech Men's Tennis to 7-0 Win Over NC State

March 1, 2003

ATLANTA — Led by a singles and doubles victory by junior Joao Menano, the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team dropped only one set en route to a 7-0 win over NC State on Saturday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga. The win was the fourth straight during the dual-match season for the Yellow Jackets.

The Jackets (6-2, 1-0 ACC) jumped on top early in the match with the Wolfpack (2-7, 0-1 ACC) by sweeping all three doubles matches. Tech’s team of Menano and fellow junior Jason Pieters were the first winners of the day, as they defeated Jon Davis and Rehman Esmail with ease at No. 2 doubles by an 8-1 score. The Yellow Jackets’ team of Trevor McLeod and West Nott clinched the doubles point with their win over Will Shaw and Chris Mills at No. 3 by an 8-4 count. The tandem of Roger Anderson and Scott Schnugg was Tech’s final doubles winner, as they downed Val Banada and R.J. Murray at No. 1 by a 9-8 (4) score.

After Tech had upped its advantage to 3-0 in the match with wins at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles, Menano dominated his match at No. 4 with NC State’s Jon Davis to seal the win for the Jackets. He won the first set by a 6-0 score and then continued his dominance in the second set, cruising to a 6-2 victory. Anderson was the Jackets’ winner at No. 1, as he defeated Murray in straight sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-2, while Schnugg was a winner for Tech at No. 2, downing Banada in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Other singles winners for the Yellow Jackets included Nott, who defeated Rehman Esmail in straight sets at No. 5 singles, winning the first set by a 7-6 (2) score and the second by a 6-4 count and Jason Pieters, who needed three sets to down Will Shaw at No. 3. Pieters dropped the first set by a 6-4 score, before rallying to win the next two frames, 7-5, 6-2.

Senior Fabio Campos was the final singles winner of the day for Tech, as he defeated Chris Mills at No. 6 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
