Menano & Campos Lead Tech Men's Tennis Past Furman, 5-2

ATLANTA – On the strength of singles wins by junior Joao Menano and senior Fabio Campos, the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team claimed a 5-2 win over Furman on Monday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga.

The Yellow Jackets (4-2) fell behind early in the match to the Paladins (3-4) by dropping two of three doubles matches to open the day. Tech’s lone win in doubles play came at No. 2, as the team of Marko Rajevac and Menano defeated Furman’s tandem of Dasef Weems and Andrew Rogers by an 8-6 score.

Tech was able to rally in singles play, winning five of the six matches. Menano gave the Jackets a 3-2 lead in the match with his dramatic win at No. 3 over Chris Henderson. The junior won the first set by a 6-4 score before dropping the second by the same 6-4 score. Menano then rallied from 5-4 down in the third to win the match 7-5. Campos clinched the match for Tech, as he picked up a victory over Allen Simmons at No. 5. After winning the first set with ease by a 6-2 score, Campos then dropped the second set 6-4. He rallied to win the third set by a 6-2 count.

Other singles winners for the Jackets included senior Roger Anderson, who picked up a straight-set victory over James Cameron at No. 1, winning the first set by a 7-5 score, before cruising to a 6-3 second-set win. Junior West Nott was Tech’s first singles winner of the afternoon, claiming a straight-set decision over Andrew Rogers at No. 4. Nott won the first set 6-4 and then had no trouble in the second set, winning 6-2. Jacket rookie Marko Rajevac was the final singles winner of the day for Tech, as he needed three sets to defeat Ryan McCarthy. McCarthy won the first set by a 7-6 score, before Rajevac won the next two by scores of 6-4 and 7-5.

Georgia Tech will be back in action on Wednesday, as it will host in-city rival Georgia State in a match that will get underway at 2 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
