Men in Sixth; Women in Eighth at ACC Track and Field Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Shantia Moss broke the Atlantic Coast Conference record in the 100-meter hurdles to place first in the preliminaries to pace the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams on day two of the ACC Outdoor Championships on Kehoe Track at Ludwig Field on the University of Maryland campus on Friday.

The women’s team finished the day in a tie for eighth place with a total of 21 points, while the men scored 24 points to sit in sixth place after day two.

Moss, a junior from Tamarac, Fla., finished the 100m hurdles with a personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.08. Moss not only broke the ACC Championships record, she also topped the Kehoe track record. In third place was senior Fatmata Fofanah, who also registered a personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.19.

On the men’s side, both sophomore Dave Ford and freshman Alphonso Jordan qualified for the tomorrow’s final in the 110-meter hurdles. Ford crossed the line seventh with a time of 14.95 and Jordan finished eighth in a time of 15.15.

Junior Jerome Miller placed second in the men’s high jump with a mark of 7 feet, ½ inch to give the Jackets eight points. Sophomore Juan Cave scored four points in the high jump after finishing fifth with a mark of 6 feet, 6 ¾ inches.

Sophomore Steve Marcelle placed fourth in the men’s discus with a throw of 172 feet, 2 inches and added five more points to the Jackets total. Freshman Samantha Musil scored two points for the Tech women when she finished seventh in the women’s discus with a mark of 155 feet, 1 inch.

Senior Lindsey Vincent garnered three more points for the women’s team after landing in sixth place in the long jump with a personal-best mark of 19 feet, 2 inches. For the men, senior James Lemons II placed fourth with an NCAA Regional mark of 24 feet, 1 inch in the long jump to earn five points for Tech.

In the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, junior Elena Linn finished second with a personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying time of 10:18.83, the second-best time in school history. Linn pulled in eight more points for the Jackets.

Senior Ashlee Kidd placed second in the women’s 400-meter dash prelims with a time of 53.44 to qualify for the finals. In the women’s 100-meter dash prelims, sophomore Jacqua Williams crossed the line first with an NCAA Regional qualifying and season-best time of 11.52. Junior Shantrell Moss placed third in the 100m prelims with a season-best time of 11.84.

Kidd, Williams and Shantrell Moss each qualified for the women’s 200-meter dash finals. All three runners ran NCAA Regional qualifying times as Kidd placed second in the prelims with a time of 23.49, Williams crossed the line third with a personal-best time of 23.63 and Moss finished sixth with a personal-best time of 23.79.

Senior Jenny Sims qualified for the finals in the women’s 1500-meter run with a time of 4:31.56 and an 11th-place finish. Sophomore E.C. Gibbs also ran a finals qualifying time in the men’s 1500m run with a time of 3:56.21.

Sophomore Mario Johnson finished seventh in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 52.71 to qualify for the finals.
