Men Hold Seventh After Two Days Of ACC Swimming Championship

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – Georgia Tech held on to its seventh-place position after day two of the 2012 ACC Swimming Championship Thursday night in Christainsburg, Va. Freshman Andrew Kosic was sixth, leading three Jackets in the points in the 50 free.

Tech has 108 points to its credit and is just 19 points shy of fifth-place NC State at the halfway mark.

It was Kosic, Nigel Plummer and Eric Chiu who combined to score 21 points for the Jackets in the 50 free. Kosic placed sixth overall with a time of 19.87, while Plummer was 10th (20.15) and Chiu was 16th (20.47). Kosic and Plummer established NCAA “B” cut times.

Those three teamed with Nico van Duijn in the 200 free relay, and Tech finished sixth in a time of 1:19.09, which was also an NCAA “B” cut.

Also for Georgia Tech on Thursday, Elliott Brockelbank was 13th in the 500 free, with and NCAA “B” cut time of 4:28.45.

North Carolina sits in first with 245.5 points after the second day of competition, ahead of Virginia (225) and Florida State (214). Virginia Tech (164) is fourth and NC State (127) is fifth place. Clemson (123.5), Georgia Tech (108), Duke (85), Maryland (75), Boston College (42), and Miami (15) round out the field.

The championship continues Friday at 11 a.m. with the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, and 100 back preliminaries, with the finals in those events on Friday night at 7 p.m. following the 400 medley relay final.
