McLeod & Sauer Named Wendy's Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week

ATLANTA – Tennis player Trevor McLeod and volleyball outside hitter Lauren Sauer were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, September 22, 2003.

McLeod, a sophomore from Kalamazoo, Mich., reached the semifinals of the Division II Singles draw at the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Championships, held in Athens, Ga. He began the tournament with a three-set victory over Ole Miss’ David Donaldson by a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 mark. He then defeated 84th-ranked and 7th-seeded Max Fomine of Mississippi State in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round of the tournament, which marked the first victory over a ranked opponent in his career. His 4-1 record marked the top tournament outing of his career.

Sauer, a junior from Huntsville, Ala., led the Georgia Tech volleyball team to a perfect 3-0 record on the weekend, earning her MVP honors while leading the team to the Georgia Tech Invitational championship. The three wins on the weekend included a come-from-behind win over 24th-ranked Wisconsin and perfect 3-0 matches against Western Carolina and South Florida. She recorded a career-high 30 kills in the Wisconsin match, and averaged 5.27 kills per game and a .406 hitting percentage on the weekend. Sauer now leads Tech with a .422 hitting percentage and 4.43 kills per game for the 2003 season.
