ATLANTA – Two Georgia Tech track and field athletes will head to Des Moines, Iowa this weekend for the NCAA Championships which will run from June 6-9 at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University. Sophomore Julienne McKee and junior Shawn Roberts will represent the university at the meet.
Roberts will be the first Jacket in action when he runs in the 800m semifinals Wednesday night at 6:15 p.m. The finals for the 800 will be held Friday night at 6:10 p.m.
McKee has qualified for two events on the weekend and will begin competition on Thursday night in the long jump starting at 5:30 p.m. She will round out her time at 10 a.m. Saturday in the triple jump.
The entire event will be streamed live. Wednesday’s events will be available via NCAA.com, and Thursday through Saturday on ESPN3.com. Saturday’s events also will be televised on ESPNU in a window beginning at noon (CT).
McKee earned her spot at the championships for her second consecutive season setting personal bests in both the long jump and triple jump at the NCAA East Regionals. On day one of the regionals, McKee took seventh place with a leap of 6.24m (20-5.75) in the long jump tying her career best set earlier this season at the Penn Relays. On day three, she took ninth in the triple jump with a launch of 13.13m (43-1), the fourth longest mark in school history and yet another personal best.
Roberts is making his first appearance at the NCAA Championships after finishing with a time of 1:48.97 in the 800m quarterfinals. His time was good enough for 12th place, rounding out the pack of qualifiers from the East Regional. He was one of three ACC runners to make the cut.
He earned a spot in the quarterfinals after winning his heat on day one of the meet. He finished in 1:49.51, first in his heat and sixth overall to keep his postseason hopes alive.
