CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Georgia Tech junior Amanda McDowell earned a spot into the singles consolation draw championship with a win over Arizona State’s Kelcy McKenna Saturday at the 2008 ITA National Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va.
McDowell, the No. 3 player in the nation, held off McKenna, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-2, in closely contested three-hour match. The third set was all McDowell after the two opponents split the first two sets with tiebreakers. McDowell will face LSU’s Megan Falcon Sunday morning at 9 a.m. for the consolation title.
“I am feeling a lot better about the way I am playing right now,” McDowell said. “I have picked my game up. Today was definitely a battle but I was able to step up in the end. McKenna is coming off a national title at the All-American Championships so it is a big win for me.”
In the Davenport Doubles Exhibition draw, McDowell and freshman Irina Falconi held off Nadine Fahoum and Charleen Haarhoff of Old Dominion, 9-8 (6).
