ATLANTA – Senior Amanda McDowell and sophomore Irina Falconi of the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will participate in the 2009 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships this Thursday-Sunday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
McDowell and Falconi, who are ranked 11th in the 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason doubles poll, will try and repeat as doubles champions when they open play in the main doubles draw. Last season, the Yellow Jacket duo defeated Fresno State’s Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4 to win the title.
“I am excited for Amanda and Irina to head west and compete in one of the few National events we have in collegiate tennis,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “I know they are looking forward to defending their doubles title. They are two of the very best players I have ever seen in collegiate tennis, so they are capable of bringing home some more hardware this year in singles and doubles.”
The pair are also entered in the main singles draw of the tournament. Falconi, a 2008 All-American in singles, is ranked eighth in the 2009 ITA preseason singles poll. McDowell is ranked No. 15 in the first poll of the year.
The famous Riviera Tennis Club has played host to this event since 1988 (it also hosted an intercollegiate women’s championship from 1986-88).
