PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Junior Amanda McDowell and freshman Irina Falconi won their singles main draw matches in straight sets Thursday to move on at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
McDowell, seeded third in the singles main draw, defeated No. 13 Jessica Nguyen of Stanford, 6-3, 6-1. McDowell will play the nation’s 22nd-ranked player, California’s Claire IIcinkas, in the second round Friday.
Falconi continued her outstanding tournament with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Katsiaryna Zheltova of Sacramento State. Zheltova is currently ranked No. 21 in the nation. Falconi will look to continue her run against the nation’s No. 2 player, Clemson’s Ana Mijacika, who is also the tournament’s No. 2 seed.
Falconi and McDowell opened the first day of the main draw competition with an 8-3 doubles win over Ashley Joelson and Yasmin Schnack of UCLA. The Yellow Jacket duo moves on to face the nation’s top ranked team from Fresno State, Melani Gloria and Tinesta Rowe, Friday.
