PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Junior Amanda McDowell and freshman Irina Falconi defeated the No. 1 doubles team in the nation Friday to reach the semifinals of the doubles main draw at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Falconi and McDowell, a main draw qualifying team, continued their spectacular run in the doubles draw with an 8-3 win over the nation’s top ranked team from Fresno State, Melani Gloria and Tinesta Rowe, Friday. The Yellow Jacket tandem will next face No. 3 Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson of Duke, who escaped a tough match against No. 6 Megan Alexander and Marrit Boonstra of Florida, in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday
In the singles draw, McDowell opened the day with a 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 22 Claire IIcinkas of California in the second round. In the quarterfinal round, the All-American and reigning NCAA Singles Champion, dropped her match to Northwestern’s sixth-ranked Maria Mosolova, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Falconi’s singles run came to an end in the second round of the main draw when she fell in three sets, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-3, to No. 2 Ani Mijacika of Clemson.
