PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Georgia Tech duo of Amanda McDowell and Irina Falconi posted a straight-set win over Duke’s Melissa Mang and Amanda Granson to advance to the title match of the 2008 ITA All-American Doubles Championships, which will be played Sunday afternoon at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The Yellow Jackets will square off against Fresno State’s No. 8 ranked Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova in the championship match, which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET
“What a great tournament for Amanda, Irina and Georgia Tech,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “The future is certainly looking bright. I like the statement these two are making. I’d like to see them run through the finish line tomorrow.”
McDowell and Falconi, a qualifying team in the doubles bracket, defeated Duke’s third-ranked squad 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals. Tech’s tandem has also defeated the nation’s No. 1, No. 17, No. 21 and No. 36 team en route to the championship match.
“We really came out well today,” McDowell said. “It was first semifinal match we have player together as a team and we were just really fired up to get the job done. We have played really good doubles together this week.”
Last year, Georgia Tech’s All-American duo of Kristi Miller and Whitney McCray reached the final of the doubles draw, falling to Tennessee’s Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zubor.
