McCray, McDowell & Johansson Advance, Join Miller in ITA Main Draw

Oct. 3, 2007

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Whitney McCray, Amanda McDowell and Maya Johansson have advanced through the ITA All-American Qualifying Draw and will join Yellow Jacket senior Kristi Miller in the 32-player main draw Thursday morning at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

McCray posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Marshall’s Kellie Schmitt in the third round of the qualifying draw, while McDowell notched a 6-3, 6-2 win against Duke’s Reka Zsilinszka Wednesday afternoon. Johansson, who began the tournament with three wins in the prequalifying bracket, has now won six-straight matches to advance to the main draw, capping her run through the qualifying draw with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Sacramento State’s Katarina Zheltova Wednesday night.

Miller, a five-time All-American at Georgia Tech, has earned one of the top eight seeds in the main draw, which is scheduled to begin Thursday morning. She will also team with McCray in the doubles draw, as the senior Yellow Jacket duo has earned one of the top four seeds in that bracket.

The Oct.4-7 main draw of the ITA All-American Championships was preceded by two sets of qualifying tournaments. The 64-player, 32 doubles team prequalifying tournament was held last weekend, with eight players and four doubles teams advancing from there to the Oct. 2-3 64-player qualifying tournament at Riviera (where eight players and four doubles teams advanced to the main draw).

The famous Riviera Tennis Club has played host to this event since 1988 (it also hosted an intercollegiate women’s championship from 1986-88).
