Matthews Qualifies for Final at US Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. – Georgia Tech track & field athlete Bria Matthews qualified for the finals in the triple jump at the U.S Olympic Trials on Monday night. She will compete in the finals on Thursday at 9:30 p.m. ET. The top three finishers at the Olympic Trials who have already met the Olympic Games qualifying standard will comprise the USA’s entrants in each event.

Matthews is coming off of one of the most remarkable freshman campaigns in school history. At the U.S. Olympic Trials on Monday night, Matthews qualified for the finals in the triple jump with a 13.48m mark in the qualifying round.

Her 10th place finish pushed her on to the final round to be held on Thursday. She competed in the qualifying round of the long jump on Friday and finished 18th with a mark of 6.17m. The top 12 finishers move on to the final round.

Former Jacket Chaunte Howard Lowe competed in the preliminaries (Friday) and the finals of the high jump (Sunday). With a first place finish and a mark of 2.01m, Howard Lowe punched her ticket to Rio with  compete in her fourth consecutive Olympic games.

Alphonso Jordan – Triple Jump (Prelims 7/7 – 7:45 p.m. ET)
Angelo Taylor – 400m Hurdles (Prelims 7/7 – 9:53 p.m. ET)
