Golfer Troy Matteson, the reigning NCAA champion, and all-America volleyball player Lynnette Moster were named Georgia Tech’s Most Valuable Athletes for 2002-03 at the annual Yellow Jacket Celebration Monday.
All-America track performer Bryan Swarn and nationally-ranked tennis standout Jaime Wong received the Total Person Awards, presented to the male and female senior student-athletes who best exemplify excellence in academics, athletics and community service. Former all-America baseball player Randy Carroll, Tech’s long-time baseball broadcaster and the President of Mountain National Bank, received the Total Person Alumnus Award.
Matteson, a senior from Austin, Texas, also received the Robert Cup as Tech’s top senior student athlete. Softball pitcher Erin Voeltz, a junior from Westlake, Calif., and junior track and cross country runner Brendon Mahoney of Cumming, Ga., were awarded the Bobby Dodd Scholarship for 2003-04 as Tech’s top returning scholar-athletes.
Captain’s Captain Awards were presented by the Georgia Tech Letterwinners Club to Swarn and junior volleyball captain Kele Eveland.
Three-time all-ACC football standout Jeremy Muyres received the Delta Air Lines Partners in Leadership Award.
Special Recognition Awards were given to swimming all-America Shilo Ayalon, all-America pitcher Kyle Bakker, all-Atlantic Coast Conference basketball player Sonja Mallory and all-ACC softball pitcher Jessica Sallinger.
The Georgia Tech All-Academic Team recognizes the top scholar on each team: Shilo Ayalon (men’s swimming), Fabio Campos (men’s tennis), Jennifer Christenson (women’s swimming), Barton Crist (men’s cross country), Jordan Crews (baseball), Dan Dyke (football), Kele Eveland (volleyball), Catherine Gunn (women’s tennis), Jennifer Lentz (woomen’s cross country), Kevin Manous (cheerleading), Greg McCormick (men’s track), David Nelson (men’s basketball), Jamie Ostrov (women’s track), Jasmina Pacariz (women’s basketball), Erin Voeltz (softball), Chan Wongluekiet (golf).
Also recognized were the All-ACC Top Six for Service: Amy Dock (track/cross country), Amandi Rhett (track), Scott Schnugg (tennis), Ashley Skala (swimming), Itai Eden (swimming) and Nate Curry (football). Senior high jumper Jamie Ostov and all-America swimming Shilo Ayalon received ACC Scholar Athlete Awards.
The following student-athletes received Spotlight Awards from the Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board: Keight Vincent (volleyball), Katie Griffin (cross country/track), Brendon Mahoney (cross country/track), Ather Brown (football), John Paul Foschi (football), Fallon Stokes (women’s baskeball), Lindsay Wood (softball), Jamie Ostrov (women’s track), Brian Fraser (men’s track), Shilo Ayalon (women’s swimming), Matthew Swain (baseball), Lisa Hancock (women’s swimming), Catherine Gunn (women’s tennis), Scott Schnugg (men’s tennis), Marvin Lewis (men’s basketball).
Senior football player Hal Higgins, who battled Hodgkin’s disease, was presented with the Yellow Jacket Perseverance Award, while long-time athletics staff member Ann Harrell was awarded the Faculty/Staff Recognition Award.
