Massey Leads Tech at Orange & Purple Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. – Sophomore All-American Chaunte Howard set a new Clemson Track Record Saturday afternoon with a clear of 6’2.00″ in the high jump to lead the Georgia Tech women’s track and field team. Senior Michael Massey tallied a second-place finish in the men’s high jump with a NCAA Region mark of 6’10.75″ to lead the men’s track and field team.

The women’s 4×100-meter relay team of Andriane Lapsley, Ashlee Kidd, Dana Rogers and Amandi Rhett posted a NCAA Region qualifying time of 45.03 to capture the relay event for the Yellow Jackets.

Sophomore Brandy Depland picked up a pair of runner-up finishes for the Rambling Wreck. Depland tallied NCAA Region marks of 42’4.25″ and 20’2.50 in the women’s triple jump and long jump, respectively. Depland’s mark in the long jump was a personal-best jump. Junior Holt McPherson posted a mark of 23’9.50″ in the men’s long jump to finish sixth for the Jackets.

Kidd tallied a pair of third-place finishes for the Yellow Jackets in the women’s 200 and 400 meters. Kidd posted NCAA times of 23.62 and 54.35, respectively. Rhett posted a NCAA Region qualifying time of 11.68 in the women’s 100-meter dash to finish second.

Junior Montrell Person returned to action for the Yellow Jackets, tallying a NCAA time of 13.94 in the preliminaries of the men’s 110-meter hurdles, finishing seventh in the finals.

Leading the Tech women in the 100-meter hurdles were Lapsley, Howard and Rogers. Lapsley posted a personal-best time of 13.79 in the prelims, finishing 11th in the finals. Howard tallied a NCAA time of 13.95, along with Rogers, in the prelims. Rogers finished 12th in the finals with a time of 14.14 and Howard did not finish in the finals.

Senior Barton Crist ran the men’s 800 meters for the Yellow Jackets and finished in third place with a time of 1:51.91. Sophomore Kira Barcus tallied a season-best mark of 10’10.00″ in the women’s pole vault to finish sixth for Tech.

Posting top-10 finishes for the Rambling Wreck in the shot put were juniors Zeb Sion and Jonathan Spillman, along with sophomore Lauren Reimer. Sion tallied a NCAA mark of 57’1.00″ to finish third in the men’s event, while Spillman tallied a mark of 53’0.00″ to finish fourth. Reimer finished ninth in the women’s shot put with a toss of 42’11.75″.

In the discus, sophomore Dore’ Madere, Spillman and Sion finished in the top-10 for Tech. Madere had a season-best throw of 145’6″ in the women’s event. Spillman tallied a Tech season-best mark of 157’6″ to finish sixth, while Sion finished eighth with a throw of 153’3″ in the men’s discus.

Tech will host the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday, May 14-15.
