Mason Miller Leads Georgia Tech Women's Tennis on Day One of ITA Regionals

Oct. 26, 2001

ATLANTA — Georgia Tech junior women’s tennis player Mason Miller was the Yellow Jackets’ top performer on Friday, as she advanced to the round of 16 in the “B” singles draw at the Omni Hotels ITA South Regional in Mobile, Ala. The three-day event is being contested at the Mobile Tennis Center. The tournament serves as a qualifier for ITA National Indoor Championships, which is the second major tourney of the collegiate tennis season.

Miller opened her day with a first-round win over Agathe De Rouck in straight sets. She took control of the match and kept up a strong pace throughout, claiming a 6-2, 6-2 win. In her second match of the day, Miller disposed of Dominique Rosenberg, also in straight sets by a 6-1, 6-1 count. She will now face Martina Janska in the next round on Saturday morning. The finalists of each draw advance to the national indoor event.

In other singles action, Tech senior Laura Ozolins won her first-round match-up with Maria Montoya in three sets by scores of 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Ozolins was unable to advance past the second round however, dropping a straight-set decision to Anca Dumitrescu by matching 6-4, 6-4 scores. The bottom half of the “A” singles bracket featured Yellow Jacket junior Jamie Wong and freshman Catherine Gunn, both of whom were second-round victims. Wong downed Natascha Immele in the first round by a 6-3, 6-1 score, but was unable to overcome Alesya Ignatieva, falling by a 6-2, 7-6(8) score. Gunn also found success in the first round, defeating Mojca Pavlinic by a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 score, before dropping a 6-4, 6-3 decision to second-seeded Lindsay Dawaf of Florida in the second round.

Both of the Yellow Jackets’ doubles entries were unable to advance past the first round and will continue play in the consolation draw on Saturday. The duo of Gunn and Ozolins fell in the first round to Natalie Schwartz and Jackie Spicjaric by an 8-3 score and will face Amy Bartlett and Brooke McNamee on Saturday morning. Miller and Wong faced Audra Adams and Alesya Ignatieva in the first round and fell by an 8-6 score and will now face Carolina Ararena and Talia Flores in the consolation draw.
