ATLANTA – Junior Steve Marcelle placed first in the shot put to lead the Georgia Tech track & field teams on day one of the Georgia Tech Invitational Friday at Griffin Track in Atlanta, Ga.

After an hour and 20 minute delay due to inclement weather, Marcelle along with senior Andy Powlen returned to the pit in the shot put to place first and second in the event. Marcelle hit a season-best mark of 61’00”, defeating the field by over three-inches. Powlen’s runner-up toss came at a distance of 57’9.75″. Both marks were NCAA regionally qualifying tallies, but the Tech throwers had already qualified earlier in the season.

Also performing well on the day for the men was senior David Ford, who locked up a spot in the finals of the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a 14.23 dash in the prelims.

On the women’s side, senior Kimery Hern led all Tech performers with a third-place mark of 187’5″ in the hammer throw. Senior Alana Clooten and sophomore Megan Manning also made it to the finals of the event, as Clooten placed fifth with a 183’00” mark and Manning seventh with a distance of 162’9″.

In the women’s shot put, freshman Bailey Wagner placed third with a throw of 49’00.25″.

The Georgia Tech Invitational continues Saturday at 11 a.m. with the women’s high jump and pole vault at Griffin Track.
