Marcelle Leads Tech on Day Two of Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA – Steve Marcelle won the men’s shot put championship to lead the Georgia Tech track & field teams on the second day of the historic Penn Relays at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia, Pa.

Marcelle, a sophomore from Green Bay, Wisc., finished first in the men’s shot put with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 58 feet, 8 inches. Junior Andy Powlen placed third with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 57 feet, 8 inches.

Senior Shantia Moss won her heat and sits in second place in the 100-meter hurdles with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.11.

Senior James Lemons II placed third in the College Men Long Jump with a mark of 23 feet, 10 inches. Sophomore Alphonso Jordan landed in fifth place with a mark of 23 feet, 8 ¼ inches.

The men’s team of Billy Mateker, Mario Johnson, Tim Guglielmo and Mark Mendrek-Laske placed 22nd in the College Men Distance Medley Relay Championship of America race with a time of 10:23.44.

In the men’s 4×400-meter relay, the team of Derek Hoye, Subbu Sivanesan, Matt DiDia and Hunter Clasen crossed the line in 27th place with a time of 3:12.69.

The women’s team of Tenisha Griggs, Antoinetta McKay, Kayla McKeirnan and Amanda Montgomery placed 22nd in the College Women Sprint Medley Championship of American with a time of 4:06.84.

The Penn Relays will continue Saturday morning at 7 a.m. with the Olympic Development Men 10k Racewalk. Field events with begin at 11 a.m. with the College Men Triple Jump.
