Marcelle, Jordan to Compete at 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships

March 12, 2009

ATLANTA – – Juniors Alphonso Jordan and Steve Marcelle will compete at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships this Friday and Saturday at the McFerrin Athletic Center in College Station, Texas.

“We are all very proud of Alphonso and Steve for the great performances that they have posted throughout the Indoor Season,” men’s head coach Grover Hinsdale said. “This is a great opportunity and I know they are excited about the challenge that awaits them in College Station this weekend.”

Marcelle, currently ranked No. 3 in the nation in the shot put, enters the meet coming off a Gold medal at the ACC Championships on Feb. 28 in which he broke the Tech Indoor record with a toss of 63’5″. The Green Bay, Wisc. native, makes his second-consecutive appearance at the Div.1 Championships after placing 13th in 2008.

Jordan, also making his second straight appearance, is ranked 13th in the triple jump with a mark of 52’6.75″ set at the Virginia Tech Elite Invitational on Feb. 7. The Charlotte, N.C. native placed 17th at the NCAA 2008 Championships, but has already eclipsed that mark by two-inches this season.

“Coach Page and Coach Bradd have done an excellent job of having them ready to compete at a high level each week and I have no doubt that they are ready for this Championship,” Hinsdale added.

Marcelle automatically qualified in the shot put and will compete Friday at 6:50 p.m., while Jordan received an at-Large bid and will compete in the triple jump Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

ESPN360.com will stream portions of the championships live both days. Remaining coverage will be available on www.NCAA.com. Additionally, ESPN2 will air a 90-minute show at 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 23.

The complete list of all student-athletes competing in the championships is available on the NCAA Web site.
