CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – Senior Keren Siebner recorded the Yellow Jackets’ highest finish at the ACC Championship since 2008 and diver Brandon Makinson claimed silver in the 1-meter to highlight the third day of the ACC Swimming & Diving Championship.
With 154.5 points through three days, the Tech women has already surpassed their four-day total of 152 from last year’s Championship. The Jackets are in eighth place entering Saturday’s final day.
“This was another great day for us with Jordan setting a school record this morning in the 100 fly, Keren coming back tonight with a fifth-place finish and Brandon winning the silver,” said head coach Courtney Shealy Hart. “We’ve had three great days and I expect that continue tomorrow.”
Siebner raced to a fifth-place finish in the 100 fly in a time of 53.89, which was an NCAA “B” cut and scored 14 points for Tech. Jordan Evans, who also reached the A-final in the 100 fly with her school record 53.79 in this morning’s prelims, finished seventh overall in 54.26 – also an NCAA “B” cut.
For Siebner, the fifth-place finish was the best for a Tech women’s swimmer at the ACC Championship since a bronze medal by Agatha Kwasnik in the 100 free in 2008.
Makinson took home All-ACC honors, winning the silver medal on the 1-meter board with his school-record score of 375 points. It marked the junior’s highest ACC finish after claiming the bronze on the 3-meter board last season.
“Brandon dove like he had something to prove today,” said diving coach John Ames. “He bounced back well after a rough time in the 3 meter yesterday and set the school record in the 1 meter today.”
Virginia continues its command of the women’s championship with 558 points, followed by North Carolina (401) in second, Florida State (302), Maryland (273) and Virginia Tech (269) to round out the top five.
Saturday’s final day begins at 11 a.m. with preliminary action, followed at 7 p.m. by the finals. Live video coverage of Saturday night’s action is available at the ACC’s Championship Central.
