ATLANTA – Senior Brendon Mahoney and junior Shanta Smith were named to the CoSida Academic All-America District III team, announced on Thursday afternoon. Mahoney graduated from Tech this past May with honors in management (3.20), while Smith is majoring in management (3.35) and will graduate next spring.

Mahoney is a four-year letterwinner for the men’s track and field. The two-time All-American and seven-time ACC champion currently owns the Tech outdoor record in the mile with a time of 4:00.29. The Cumming, Ga., native won the 800 and mile ACC titles during the course of the indoor season and captured ACC titles in the 800 and 1500 at the outdoor ACC meet, earning ACC Most Valuable Performer honors for both seasons. The 2000 ACC Rookie of the Year has earned a total of 13 all-conference accolades and is set to compete in his final Outdoor NCAA Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas, June 9-12, in the 1500.

Smith is a three-year letterwinner for the women’s track and field team. During the indoor season, Smith broke the school record in the triple jump with a leap of 43’4.50″ at the Clemson Invitational. The Miami, Fla., native earned All-ACC honors with a runner-up finish in the triple jump this past indoor season. Slowed by a foot injury in the outdoor season, Smith still garnered all-conference honors in the 200 meters at the outdoor ACC meet. A seven-time All-ACC honoree, Smith won ACC titles in the indoor triple jump in 2001 and ’02, along with running a leg of the ’03 4x400m relay champion team at the indoor conference meet.

The men’s and women’s track and field teams will be represented by a total of nine Yellow Jackets at the NCAA Track and Field Championships, June 9-12, at the University of Texas.
