Lagerqvist, Chiu Keep Jackets In Seventh At ACC Championship

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – Anton Lagerqvist was fifth in the 100 breast and Eric Chiu was sixth in the 100 fly to highlight day three of the ACC Men’s Swimming Championship for Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets hold on to seventh place heading to Saturday’s final day.

The Tech men saw six different swimmers score points in two events Friday night in Christiansburg, Va., highlighted by Lagerqvist and Chiu. With 183 points, the Yellow Jackets sit in seventh place with one day remaining, and are 7.5 points back of sixth-place Duke.

Lagerqvist was clocked at 54.78 in claiming a fifth-place finish in the 100 breast, followed by Ryan Salmon in 10th (55.51) and Max Randolph in 11th (55.53). The times for Lagerqvist and Salmon were NCAA “B” cuts.

Eric Chiu put down a time of 47.79 in posting a sixth-place finish in the 100 fly 47.79. Nico van Duijn, who also reached the A-final, finished seventh (47.90) and Andrew Kosic touched the wall in 11th (47.76). The times for Chiu and van Duijn were B-cuts.

Tech rebounded well Friday night after a balky start that saw the Yellow Jackets’ 400 free relay get disqualified for an early take off.

Junior diver Brandon Makinson’s 17 points from his second-place and school-record finish in the 1 meter diving (375.25) also factored in to Friday’s score.

Virginia leads with 406 points, ahead of North Carolina (394) and host Virginia Tech (387.5). Florida State (353), NC State (254.5), Duke (190.5), Georgia Tech (183). Clemson (181.5), Maryland (148), Boston College (64) and Miami (27) round out the field.

The last day of the championship starts on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the preliminaries of the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and 1650 free. The finals in those events and the 400 free relay will start at 7 p.m.
