Kristi Miller Captures Second-Consecutive Wilson/ITA South Region Singles Title

Oct. 22, 2006

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Kristi Miller earned her second-consecutive Wilson/ITA South Region Singles title, defeating her own teammate Kirsten Flower, a rookie, in straight sets Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Alabama.

Flower gave the Georgia Tech All-American her toughest challenge of the tournament, taking both sets to tiebreakers before Miller won, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4). Prior to the finals, Miller hadn’t dropped more than eight total games in a match in the tournament, and had only done that on two occasions, while winning all five of her matches in straight sets.

Earlier in the day, Miller, the tournament’s top singles seed, advanced to the finals by stopping the No. 4 seed, Georgia’s Natalie Frazier, 6-3, 6-2, while the unseeded Flower downed third-seeded Shadisha Robinson of South Florida, 6-2, 6-2.

After losing her first round singles match last Thursday, Amanda McDowell battled through the consolation bracket to the finals, which was played Sunday afternoon. In the morning session, the freshman from Atlanta stopped Florida’s Lolita Frangulyan, 6-4, 6-3 in the consolation semifinals and then defeated Frangulyan’s teammate, Csilla Borsanyi, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, to capture the consolation championship.

Miller also teamed with senior Alison Silverio to advance to the doubles semifinals, but the Georgia Tech duo fell, 8-4, to the Florida tandem of Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak early Sunday evening to close out the long weekend for the Yellow Jackets.
