Know The Coach - Alan Drosky

July 13, 2009

This summer, each Georgia Tech head coach will be featured in a new series — “Know The Coach.” Each week, a different head coach will be profiled where you can get to know them outside the competition field. Week six features cross country and women’s track coach Alan Drosky. Check out what he had to say…

Born: Orlando, Fla. on September 6, 1964
Status: married for 21 years
Alma Mater: Georgia Tech
What’s on TV: Fox News, Food Network or Ultimate Fighter Reality Show
What’s in my iPod: Assistant Coach Megesi’s assorted stuff (i.e. Tori Amos) — don’t know how to do it myself!
What I drive: Dodge Ram Truck or my Harley 1200cc Custom Sportster
Favorite flicks: not a movie buff, but maybe Shawshank Redemption, A Few Good Men and Shakespeare in Love
What I’m reading: assorted coaching materials or Outcasts United (about youth soccer team in Clarkston, Ga.)
Worst habit: somewhat weekly cigar
On my office walls: family pics, two D. Morgan paintings, two national champion plaques for David Krummenacker and one ACC Team Championship (Indoor Track 2002)
Would love to trade places with for a day: Bill Gates — how much does he make in a day?
First job: newspaper delivery boy in Delaware on my skateboard — no lie!
Talent I’d like to have: be able to play an instrument; piano would be first
Favorite athletes to watch in other sports: Lance Armstrong
One coaching peer I truly respect: I respect virtually all of them
Favorite city to visit: I like so many, but maybe Philadelphia for the Penn Relays; if not there, does Disney count as a city?
Favorite team as a kid: Philadelphia 76ers
Favorite values in others: I love people who care
Favorite attribute about myself: learned in school at Tech — I find a way to get things done…
And least: I usually procrastinate so long that I have no choice!
My heroes: my wife Kim, the brain aneurysm survivor
My bucket list: finish hiking the Appalachian Trail, ride across the country on my Harley
Favorite quote: from Winston Churchill — “If you’re going through hell, keep going!”
and from Calvin & Hobbes — “our actions show what is in our heart.”
The professional athlete’s poster I had on my wall: Dr. J, Julius Erving, of course!
The thing I enjoy most about game day is: I enjoy being moved by inspiring efforts
I have a sweet tooth for: ice cream (one time had 39 scoops in five days in AA dining hall which is believed to be AA record)
I’ve cried while watching: Marley & Me, on a plane to Hawaii two weeks ago
Favorite trail to run: Sweetwater Creek State Park, Ga.
Favorite track & field stadium: Hayward Field, Eugene, Ore.
Favorite All-time Sneaker: Adidas Superstar
Prefontaine Mustache or clean shaven: depends on the season
Twitter or Facebook: neither, email and text work fine
Favorite dance move: the robot, no question
Favorite All-time LP record: Commodores Live!
