CLEMSON, S.C. – Junior Nikita Kirillov finished first in the men’s pole vault, while senior Julienne McKee won the women’s triple jump as the Georgia Tech track and field team opened its 2013-14 indoor season on Saturday at the Orange & Purple Classic.
Kirillov took first in the pole vault with a leap of 5.10m (16-08.75). Sophomore Nathan Daniel followed in sixth place with a vault of 4.35m (14-03.25). In the women’s pole vault, Samantha Becker placed fifth with a height of 3.70m (12-01.50).
McKee won the triple jump with a distance of 12.67m (41-07.00). The Marietta, Ga., native also placed second in the long jump (6.07m; 19-11.00), while sophomore Donjhae Jones took fourth in long jump (5.80m; 19-00.50).
Also in the field events, Brandon Mbaba took second in the high jump with a distance of 2.00m (6-06.75).
On the track, Georgia Tech’s women’s DMR team finished first. The foursome of Maria Boff, Rachel Hammond, Morgan Jackson and Allison Brackin won the event in a time of12:33.15. The men’s DMR of Patrick Fleming, Adonis Gaines, Jeremy Greenwald and Justin Weaver placed second with a time of 10:36.51.
Tech’s 4×400-meter relay team logged a third place finish as Alexander Reese, Julian Darden, Zack Fanelty and Cole Jackob recorded a time of 3:27.21.
In the distance events, Kelly Meyer took second in the 3,000 meters (10:19.23). Freshman Witt Nix placed third in the 5,000 meters in his first collegiate meet with a time of 15:51.04. Austin Veith followed in fifth place, crossing the line in a time of16:29.66.
Christina Pensock placed third in the 400 meters (58.75) and freshman Jazmyne Taylor followed in sixth (1:00.26). Nico Metzler recorded a fourth place finish in the 800 meters and Chris Burnett took fifth with times of 1:57.27 and 1:58.60, respectively.
In the hurdle events, Jones placed fifth place in 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.95. On the men’s side, Spencer Allen logged a third place finish in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.06.
The Yellow Jackets continue the indoor season on Jan. 18 at the Auburn Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
