>> Georgia Tech brings an eight-game road trip to a close this weekend with a key ACC Coastal Division series at Virginia Tech. The teams are separated by one games in the standings. All three games can be heard on WREK 91.1 FM Atlanta and live audio can also be accessed at RamblinWreck.com and via WREK on the TuneIn app.
>> The Yellow Jackets have won the regular-season series versus the Hokies for four straight years. All-time, Tech leads the series 24-14, including an 8-4 mark in Blacksburg.
>> Tech leads the ACC in fielding percentage (.978) and is fifth in double plays (26). Last season, the Jackets led the NCAA with 77 double plays and set school records for fielding (.973) and double plays. Since 2012, Tech has fielded .973 as a team and recorded the NCAA’s third-most double plays (221).
>> Junior Matt Gonzalez was 5-for-9 over the Jackets’ two-game midweek sweep at No. 21 Georgia and at Georgia State. Gonzalez doubled, homered, drove in five runs and scored three times in the two wins. The junior added 103 points to his batting average in the month of March, going 24-for-75 (.320) with seven doubles and all three of his home runs coming in March, after slow start to his season.
>> Tech is outscoring opponents 50-12 over the final two innings plus extras. The Jackets have three walk-off wins — including March 21’s 6-5 victory over North Carolina — and have won four times when trailing in the eighth inning (4-6) and three times when trailing in the ninth (3-5). Ten of Tech’s 19 wins this year are come-from-behind victories.
>> Sophomore RHP Zac Ryan is the only pitcher in the nation with five or more wins and five or more saves. He is already 5-0 with five saves and a 1.86 ERA. Of his team-best 15 appearances, 12 have been scoreless, including 10 of the last 12. Ryan is fifth in the ACC in ERA, second in wins, third in saves and seventh in opponent average (.198).
>> Of Tech’s 261 innings pitched this season, 82 percent have come from freshmen or sophomores (213.2 innings), which is the highest percentage of any team in the nation.
>> Senior CF Daniel Spingola enters the weekend having reached base safely in 20 consecutive games. Spingola was the ACC hits leader last year with 82. Freshman 2B Wade Bailey owns a career-best eight-game hitting streak and is hitting .310 (9-for-29) over the streak with a team-best six runs, two doubles and four RBI.
>> Tech continues to play without rookie slugger Kel Johnson, who suffered an ankle injury on March 21 versus North Carolina. Johnson was hitting .379 with seven home runs and 25 RBI.
>> Danny Hall is in his 22nd season as Tech’s head coach (28th overall), and his last four seasons on the Flats have resulted in two ACC tournament titles (2012, 2014) and an ACC regular-season crown (2011). Hall is a two-time ACC Coach of the Year and is among the 15 winningest active coaches in college baseball with 1,118 wins.
