Athens, Ga. – Tech took three matches in the first round of the Southern Intercollegiate. Sophomore Jose Luis Muguruza led the way for the Jackets defeating Nathan Sachs of Vanderbilt in straight sets to advance to the second round. The Wesley Chapel, Fla. native made short work of Sachs defeating him in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
Marko Rajevac won a hard fought battle against Vanderbilt’s Evan Dufaux, winning 6-4, 7-5. The junior from Belgrade, Yugoslavia played his second match of the afternoon falling to Florida’s Stephan Tell in three sets. Rajevac fell 4-6 before battling back 6-3 in the second set. Tell got the best of Rajevac in the third set taking it 6-1.
Joining Muguruza and Rejevac was senior Noah Tyler who defeated Thiago Barbosa of Winthrop in straight sets (7-5, 6-2).
The Jackets had three freshmen making their collegiate debut on Friday. George Grelesiani was the first freshman to hit the court. Duke’s Ned Samuelson took the match in straight sets defeating Grelesiani, 6-2, 6-0. David North didn’t fare much better as he fell in his first match to Colin Purcell of Georgia. Purcell made short work of the freshman winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Results for freshman Scott Blackmon were not available.
