Jordan Nominated for 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

July 10, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech junior quarterback Matthew Jordan is one of 146 student-athletes that has been nominated for the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, the American Football Coaches Association announced on Monday.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team recognizes student-athletes for their dedication to volunteerism and enriching the lives of others.

Jordan, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 11, is active in mentoring young people with diabetes and with various charities devoted to supporting diabetics and finding a cure for the disease. On Monday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution chronicled his recent participation as a speaker at Camp Kudzu, a summer camp for children and teens with Type 1 diabetes held at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, Ga.

On the field, Jordan is one of four signal-callers vying to replace three-year starter Justin Thomas behind center for Georgia Tech in 2017. In 14 career games as Thomas’ backup, Jordan has accounted for 10 touchdowns, including six on the ground last season. In the only start of his career, the 6-2, 208-pounder ran 32 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 30-20 victory at No. 18 Virginia Tech on Nov. 12 of last season.

With two seasons of eligibility still remaining, Jordan has already completed coursework for a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Comprised of 11 student-athletes from NCAA Division I FBS and 11 from Division I FCS/Division II/Division III/NAIA, the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team will be unveiled in September. The team will be selected by a special voting panel consisting of former Good Works Team members and prominent college football media. Former Good Works Team member Tim Tebow (Florida — 2009) headlines the voting panel.

In 2016-17, Georgia Tech was the only school in the nation represented on both the Allstate AFCA and NABC Good Works Teams for football and men’s basketball, as defensive lineman KeShun Freeman and forward Rand Rowland earned the respective honors.

Jordan and the Yellow Jackets open the 2017 campaign on Monday, Sept. 4 versus Tennessee in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at brand-new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta. Season tickets, which include a seat for the highly anticipated opener against Tennessee at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and Flex Packs, which allow fans to purchase tickets for any three, four, five or six games at Bobby Dodd Stadium — including the Nov. 25 showdown versus archrival Georgia — are on sale now.
