Jordan, McKay Jr. Lead Track & Field on Day One of VT Elite Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Senior Alphonso Jordan won the high jump, while junior Antonio McKay Jr. captured the 200-meter dash to lead the Georgia Tech track & field team on day one of the Virginia Tech Elite Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.

Jordan and McKay Jr. lead a Yellow Jacket effort that picked up a total of 18 top ten finishes In various events on the day in Blacksburg.

On the women’s side, things got started with the 60-meter dash, as junior Jenae Anderson crossed the finish line in 7.56 to finish sixth overall in the finals. Anderson followed up her impressive run in the 60-meters with an even more impressive showing in the 200-meter dash, placing third overall with a time of 24.56. Teammate Tiffany Grant finished right behind Anderson in the 200, crossing the finish line in 24.57 to finish fourth overall, while freshman Kellie Christian finished sixth in 24.96.

In the women’s 800-meter dash, junior Amanda Montgomery recorded a top ten finish for the Tech women in eighth after finishing in 2:17.23. Freshman Jade Sims finished right behind Montgomery with a ninth place finish in 2:18.51. Next in the women’s one mile run, freshman Annie Martin placed fifth with a time of 5:02.48, while sophomore Mary Kate DuBard placed seventh with a time of 5:03.88.

Next in the women’s 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Melanie Akwule finished sixth after crossing the finish line in 8.69, while in the women’s portion of the high jump, freshman Jasmine Kent placed seventh overall with a 19′ 4¾” jump in the finals.

Meanwhile, in the women’s high jump, sophomore Bianca Stewart recorded the highest individual finish for the Georgia Tech women, placing in second with a mark of 5′ 8½” in the finals. The last performance of note on the evening for the Yellow Jacket women came in the pole vault, when sophomore Bailey Wagner finished 10th overall with a 52′ 3½” mark in the finals.

On the men’s side of the ledger for the night, McKay Jr. got things going quickly for Tech, as he captured the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.42. Next up in the men’s one mile run, fellow junior D.J. McMillan finished sixth overall in a time of 4:14.90. McMillan was joined in the top ten in the one mile run by teammate Billy Mateker, who placed ninth overall in 4:16.58.

Rounding out action for the men on the night was Jordan’s performance in the long jump, as the senior recorded a 24′ 11¼” in the finals to capture the event. The final performance of note on the night for the Yellow Jackets came in the weight throw, as sophomore Aaron Unterberger recorded a 52′ 8¾” effort in the finals to finish tenth overall.

Action at the Virginia Tech Elite Invitational concludes tomorrow in Blacksburg, Va. Competition is set to being at 10 a.m.
