THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s tennis junior Kenya Jones was tabbed the ACC Co-Player of the Week after going undefeated this past weekend. Jones helped the Jackets to a 1-1 week, including a victory over No. 27 Syracuse.
Jones collected a pair of doubles victories and singles wins when Tech faced No. 3 Duke and No. 27 Syracuse. Opening the weekend, Jones and doubles partner Nadia Gizdova, collected Tech’s only win against the Blue Devils, defeating Kelly Chen and Maria Mateas, 6-3. Jones, ranked No. 24 nationally, then put Tech on the scoreboard, pocketing a singles triumph over No. 22 Mateas from the one spot, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5).
Last Sunday, Jones helped the Jackets upset No. 27 Syracuse with a 4-3 victory. Jones and Gizdova rolled past Libi Mesh and Sofya Golubovskaya on court three, 6-3, to give the Jackets the edge in doubles action. The junior then cushioned Tech’s lead over the Orange with a three-set win over No. 42 Gabriela Knutson on court one. Jones pocketed the first, 6-4, but dropped the second before cruising to a 6-0 third set victory.
On the season, Jones is 19-7 overall in singles play and 3-0 against league opponents. In doubles action, Jones is 13-8 overall and 3-0 in the ACC.
Georgia Tech collected a pair of weekly honors earlier this season when Valeriya Deminova was named ACC Co-Player of the Week and Jeanette Lin garnered Freshman of the Week (Feb. 19).
The Jackets return to the courts with a pair of weekend matches at Wake Forest on Friday and Louisville on Sunday.
