THE FLATS – Facing weather delays and a move indoors on day three of the ITA Southeast Regionals, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team collected four wins on Saturday between doubles and singles. The Jackets secured spots in the doubles semifinals and singles quarterfinals on Sunday.
Kenya Jones and Dalila Said captured a pair of wins on Saturday to clinch a spot in the semifinals tomorrow. The pair opened the morning facing FSU’s Ariana Rahmanparast/Nandini Das, pocketing an 8-2 victory, to take on Georgia’s Katarina Jokic/Elena Christofi in the quarterfinals. The Jackets took a 6-4 lead, but the Lady Bulldogs battled back to force a 7-all tiebreak. Jones and Said raced out with a 5-1 tiebreak edge and closed out the triumph, 7-2.
Jones and Said will face McCartney Kessler and Victoria Emma of Florida in the semifinals on Sunday.
Competing in the main draw singles round of 16, Jones secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Rebeka Stolmar of UCF, while Said dropped a hard-fought three-set battle to Ana Madcur (Miami), 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In consolation action, freshman Valeriya Deminova, the only Jacket to play outdoors on Saturday, picked up a win over Eva Chivu of Georgia State. The Jacket notched the first set, 6-4, but dropped the second, 6-4, to force a 10-point tiebreak. The foes went head-to-head in the tiebreak, but Deminova held strong, collecting the 10-8 victory.
Action on Sunday is set to begin at 9 a.m. with consolation doubles. Main draw action will start at 10:30 a.m. as both singles quarterfinals and semifinals will be played, followed by doubles semifinals.
