ATLANTA–For the fourth time this season, Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Back of the Week, this time after he turned in another sensational performance to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 31-23 victory over NC State.
Johnson caught nine passes for a career-best 168 yards with two touchdown passes. He caught touchdown passes of 25 yards and 43 yards in the first quarter to stake Tech to an early 14-3 lead.
The Jackets trailed 23-21 in the fourth quarter when Johnson made a diving catch on third-and-seven to keep the drive alive with a first down at the Tech 39-yard line. He later had an eight-yard run and a 10-yard reception on the drive, which resulted in the go-ahead field goal.
With Tech holding a one-point lead, Johnson made a 33-yard reception down to the eight-yard line to set up the clinching touchdown with two minutes left.
The attention that Johnson drew also opened up the running game and allowed Tech tailback Tashard Choice to rush for a career-best 164 yards.
Johnson, the ACC leader in receptions and receiving yards per game, set several records against the Wolfpack. His two touchdown catches give him 11 on the season, setting an new Tech record. He currently ranks third in the nation in touchdown receptions.
He also raised his career total to 24 touchdown catches, tying the Tech record held by Kelly Campbell. Finally, he recorded the 11th 100-yard game of his career, breaking another school record.
