Atlanta – Senior Jillian O’Neill was named ACC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the first week of the 2012 season the league announced today.
O’Neill, ranked No. 45, battled past Denise Dy, ranked No. 10, of Washington in a two-and-a-half hour marathon match to begin the second day of the Michigan Invitational. O’Neill won the three-set match 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(4).
The Montreal native teamed with sophomore Alex Anghelescu for an 8-5 doubles win over Michigan’s 24th-ranked team of Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender
“Jillian played extremely well all weekend and gained a great deal of confidence by beating quality opponents in both singles and doubles,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “We are fortunate to work with Scott McDonald, our strength coach, who has done a fabulous job with Jillian and the rest of the team. When Jillian is fit and strong, she is certainly one of the best players in college tennis. Jillian is going to have a huge season.”
O’Neill lost only three games en route to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Arkansas’ Claudine Paulson to open the tournament and again team with Anghelescu for an 8-6 win over Washington’s doubles team of Andjela Nemcevic and Capucine Gregoire.
