CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Georgia Tech women’s team won nine of 12 singles matches against members of North Carolina’s and Furman’s teams on the first day of the UNC Invitational at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
“I was happy to see our players get some solid matches under our belts,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “Our doubles play was very good this morning. We need to keep working on our mental toughness in singles play, but we will continue get better as the weekend progresses.”
Senior Christy Striplin earned a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (3) come-from-behind win in the top flight over Katrina Tsang. Sophomore Noelle Hickey held off Austin Smith with a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (6) win in the second flight. Also earning singles victories were freshmen Viet Ha Ngo and Hillary Davis in the third and fourth flights, respectively.
Against Furman, Hickey defeated Jessica Preeg in the second flight, 6-1, 6-1. Ngo ran past Lauren Tomory 6-0, 6-1 in the third flight. Davis, sophomore Sasha Krupina and freshman Lynn Blau also earned win for the Jackets.
Tech swept through doubles play as Striplin and Hickey, Krupina and Ngo and Davis and Blau each earned victories Friday.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Saturday in the second day of competition.
