ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete across town in the Spec Towns Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 7-8, in Athens, Ga. The meet will start on Friday with the hammer throw at 3:45 p.m.
Several Jackets attained NCAA East Region qualifying marks last weekend at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. Leading the way were seniors Eric Massey and Nico Shaner.
Massey tallied a mark of 198 feet, 7 inches, in the hammer, while Shaner posted a mark of 206 feet, 11 inches, in the javelin, both posting personal-record marks.
Senior Andriane Lapsley, junior Ashlee Kidd and freshmen April Phillips, Kimery Hern and Mellany Stanislaus posted NCAA Region qualifying marks for the women’s track and field team.
Lapsley ran season-best times of 11.37 in the 100-meter dash and 23.23 in the 200-meter dash to win both events last Saturday.
Kidd, returning from a hamstring injury, clocked a time of 54.16 in the 400 meters to finish in second place for Tech.
Phillips, a two-sport athlete for the Jackets (women’s basketball), threw the shot put 47 feet, 2 ½ inches, to finish in third place for the Rambling Wreck.
Hern tallied a lifetime-best mark of 157 feet, 6 inches, in the discus to record a NCAA Region mark. Stanislaus finished the triple jump with a PR mark of 41 feet, ½ inch.
The following teams will be in the field; No. 4 Georgia women, along with the UGA men’s team, South Carolina, Purdue and Georgia Tech, Florida (women), Illinois and Minnesota and Illinois (men). Following the men and women’s hammer throw on Friday, there are 35 events scheduled for Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
