Jackets to Think Pink vs. UNC Sunday

Feb. 8, 2008

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (18-5, 5-4 ACC) will try and shake off a tough road loss when it hosts No. 3/3 North Carolina (21-2, 8-0) Sunday. The Yellow Jackets will unveil their pink uniforms in the “Think Pink” game scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

The game will be televised live on the ACC Regional Sports Networks (Fox Sports South in Atlanta). Rich Waltz and Debbie Antonelli will call all the action. Tech fans can also listen to Richard Musterer and Kurt Hoyt call the game on WREK radio (91.1 FM/www.wrek.org), Georgia Tech women’s basketball’s flagship station as well as XM Radio (Channel 191).

“Our players and staff are looking forward to the pink game against North Carolina,” head coach MaChelle Joseph. “It is an opportunity for us to give support to all of the women and their families who are affected by breast cancer. This also allows us to show our support for Kay Yow, a woman who has dedicated her life’s work to women’s basketball.”

Tech has joined forces with the WBCA and Russell Athletic for its 2008 “Think Pink” game. The team will wear the pink uniforms as they aid in the fight against breast cancer. Other Tech women’s teams will also be in attendance handing out t-shirts and collecting donations for the Atlanta Susan G. Komen Foundation. “Think Pink” is a collaborative initiative between the WBCA and Zeta Tau Alpha. The team has designated this game as a “Pink Out”, asking fans to come out and wear pink.

“I ask everyone join us and wear pink for our “Pink Out” game in honor of Kay Yow and all the breast cancer survivors that have bravely fought this very tough opponent,” Joseph said.

This is the second meeting of the season between the two programs, with UNC winning the first game, 99-78, in Chapel Hill. The Jackets had a season-high 22 steals and forced the Tar Heels into 32 turnovers but it was not enough.

Tech is coming off a last-second loss to Miami. The Jackets held a one-point advantage over the Hurricanes with 19 seconds but a costly turnover gave the ‘Canes the final possession of the game. Epiphany Woodson knocked down a three-point basket to give Miami the win.

The Jackets are led by Janie Mitchell, who is averaging 17.3 points and 6.5 rebounds. Chioma Nnamaka moved into first place on the Georgia Tech all-time three-pointers made list after knocking down four at Miami.

Tech has a day off after this game before it will take on Savannah State next Tuesday, Feb. 12. Tip-off at Alexander Memorial Coliseum is scheduled for 7 p.m.
