Jackets to Host Second-Consecutive Doubleheader Sunday

Feb. 1, 2008

The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (2-0) continues it 2008 campaign by hosting its second-consecutive doubleheader Sunday at the BillMooreTennisCenter. The Yellow Jackets will face USC Upstate (0-1) at 10 a.m., followed by a match-up against Georgia Southern at 2 p.m.

“We are excited about playing two matches again this Sunday,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “USC Upstate has a good team this year and we know them pretty well.  Georgia Southern had some players that played very well against us this fall and I know they will be ready to play. This weekend is another opportunity to grow as a team and we are ready to do just that.”

Tech will meet the USC Upstate Spartans for the first time in the early morning match-up, its third-straight match against a first-time opponent. The match against Georgia Southern is a different story, as the two programs have faced each other 25 times with the Jackets holding a 16-9 advantage in the series.

The Jackets opened the season last weekend by sweeping its dual-match season-opening doubleheader with a pair of 7-0 wins over Lipscomb and Gardner-Webb. Freshman Guillermo Gomez, playing at the No. 1 singles position, picked up two victories to lead the way.

“We fought hard last weekend and showed some good composure,” Thorne said. “We are looking for consistency in what we bring out on the court everyday and that is the way we have been training.”

Tech continues its dual-match season on Sunday, Feb. 10 at the BillMooreTennisCenter. The Jackets will meet MississippiState of the Southeastern Conference at noon.
