WACO, Tex. – Amanda Craddock, Amanda McDowell, Christy Striplin and Whitney McCray will all compete in title matches at the 2006 Rice Invitational Sunday after recording victories on the second day of the tournament, which is being held at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium on the campus of Rice University.
Craddock, McDowell and Striplin will all compete for singles titles Sunday morning, while the doubles team of Craddock and McCray will also play for the championship of the doubles draw.
Craddock advanced to the finals of the Blue Draw with a semifinal victory against Baylor’s Iva Mihaylova, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, and will play her own teammate, McDowell, Sunday at 10 a.m. CT after the Yellow Jacket freshman stopped SMU’s Natalia Bubien, 6-3, 6-4, in her semifinal match Saturday afternoon.
Striplin will vie for the singles title of the Gray Draw after stopping Baylor’s Jana Bielikova, 7-5, 6-1, and will face Rice’s Rebecca Lin in the finals after the Owl standout stopped McCray, 6-4, 7-5, in the semis.
McCray and Craddock recorded their second shutout of the doubles tournament with an 8-0 victory over the SMU duo of Chay and Marta before stopping Rice’s Chao and Lee, 9-8 (4) in the semis to advance to Sunday’s championship match.
After winning all 10 (eight singles, two doubles) matches the Jackets played on the first day of competition, Georgia Tech has now won 13 of 14 singles matches and five of six doubles matches through the first two days.
