Jackets Take Nine of 13 Matches at Bulldog Scramble

Oct. 9, 2009

ATHENS, Ga. –

Dusan Miljevic, Miguel Muguruza and Dean O’Brien each won a pair of singles matches as Georgia Tech captured nine overall in 13 tries Friday on the first day of the Bulldog Scramble at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Muguruza, a junior from Wesley Chapel, Fla., and Miljevic, a sophomore from Novi Sad, Serbia, each won a doubles match as well to complete a perfect 3-0 day.

In Athens, Muguruza teamed with Ryan Smith of Marietta, Ga., to defeat Charlie Jones and Alex DiValerio of Vanderbilt in doubles, 8-4, then downed Clemson’s Robert Pietrucha, 7-6 (2), 6-3 in dingles. He completed his day with a 6-4, 6-4 win over 63rd ranked Bryant Salcedo of Vanderbilt.

Miljevic and freshman Magin Ortiga captured an 8-4 doubles win over Moritz Dettinger and Pietrucha of Clemson. Miljevic went on to defeat Georgia’s Christian Vitulli, 6-0, 6-3, in his first singles match, then finished his day with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Vanderbilt’s Vijay Paul.

O’Brien, a junior from Benmore, South Africa, also beat Paul in singles, 7-5, 6-2, then captured a straight-set match from Jones, 6-3, 6-2.

“Overall, as a team, we finally played like a Division I school,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “It was a good day for quite a few of the guys. We had some serious thoughts in practice this week, and they needed to get going. Everyone competed well today and did what we expect. Tomorrow, I want to see the same kind of competitiveness, and we can begin to hang our hats on some people.”

In the round-robin format involving Georgia, Clemson and Vanderbilt, the Yellow Jackets won five of seven singles matches with Vanderbilt, three of five with Georgia, and captured their only match with Clemson.

Austin Roebuck, a senior from Athens, won his only singles match Friday, as did Smith.

Saturday’s schedule features doubles at 9 a.m., followed by a round of singles and an additional doubles match for each team.
